ONE MAN’S MISSION TO SAVE 10,000 DOGS 🐕

There are an estimated 500 million stray dogs in the world. It's too big of a number to comprehend, too sad of a situation to dwell on for long, and too large of a problem to tackle.

Or is it...?

Meet Niall Harbison, a man who has made it his life's mission to make a dent in this problem.

Niall stumbled into his life's purpose accidentally, as many of us do. His career included being a personal chef 👨‍🍳 (he made Irish breakfast for Bono once), starting 3 different tech businesses, and unfortunately developing an addiction to alcohol 🍸.

Amid his career he moved to Thailand on the island of Koh Samui to work remotely. It was there his alcoholism culminated in a trip to the ICU and the contemplation of what he was doing with his life and wether he would even have one for much longer.

As is often the case, the thing that pulled him out of his darkest moments wasn’t a thing at all—it was a dog 🐕.

Her name was Lucky, and after discovering how rewarding it was to feed, bathe, and care for one stray dog, he realized he had found his calling.

So what could he do?

He decided that his goal would be to help save 10,000 stray dogs a month through a combination of feeding, vaccinating, sterilizing, and re-homing.

He also came to the realization that the biggest issue is the amount of reproduction among stray dogs, and that sterilizing them would have the largest impact on his goal. Every dog sterilized potentially stops hundreds more from a life of suffering. So his plan is as follows:

1. Create a home base to house sick dogs and operate from 🏠

2. A feeding process to get food to all the stray dogs on the island 🍲🏝️

3. Slowly try to vaccinate and sterilize the strays 💉

4. Spread awareness via his newsletter and social media 🗞️

5. Fund or start a clinic focusing on efficient sterilization & vaccination 🏥

6. Get as many dogs adopted as he can 🐶💖

A day in the life

Each day starts out with about 2 hours of feeding around the island.

Niall and other volunteers cruise around dropping off food at different locations.

Next up is health care.

A mix of vet appointments, giving out medication, and a host of other tasks to nurse many pups back to health.

Niall also carves out time to create social media content to help spread the word and gather donations.

Add in time for logistics on food, managing volunteers, another evening feeding, and this becomes more than a full time job.

Some numbers:

• 500 million stray dogs across the world

• 10,000 in Koh Samui alone

• Niall started feeding 5 dogs a day, and now pumps out 5,000 meals per week featuring chicken, rice, and vegetables

• 50 dogs sterilized per month costing ~$3,000, but moving to 100 dogs soon

• 143k Twitter followers, 442k Instagram followers, 344k Tik Tok followers

While Niall receives donations, he also shoulders a lot of the costs himself, which requires some fantastic scrappiness, such as mini shelters for the dogs and converting old shipping containers into his HQ / home:

The two biggest things people can do are to donate and to spread awareness. As we covered, this is a massive issue that will require a lot of resources, but one that many don't think about.

FUR-BABY BOOM: MILLENNIALS CHOOSE PAWS OVER PACIFIERS 🐾 👶

Why are Millennials so obsessed with dogs?

Well, that is an easy one, dogs are f^*#$ing awesome.

But seriously, we've seen a huge spike in pet ownership over the last 3 years, hitting an all time high of 70% of households owning one.

Millennials have lead the way as the largest segment at 33% of the total. It's estimated that roughly 50% of Millennials own a dog.

So why is this the case? Well we have some theories. Let's discuss.

Dogs are a substitute / test for having children 👨‍👦.

Millennials are having less children and having them at an older age. However the urge to care is still there. We think a dog is how some are getting a dry run at what it's going to be like to be responsible for another living thing.

Dogs are a way of putting down roots 🌳. 

For Millennials, traditional milestones like buying a house may feel out of reach, so having a dog helps establish more of a "home". It might sound silly, but having where you live feel like a home has a lot to do with who you share the space with.

It's like having a roommate but without the dirty dishes 🧆!

When you get to a certain age, you may no longer want a non-romantic roommate. Someone who gets in your space, plays their music loud, etc.

But living alone can be…lonely.

So what's better than a roommate that gives you constant love, companionship, but doesn't leave their dirty clothes in a pile by the washing machine?

Even deeper, a loving companion helps soothe the psyche from the burdens of life ❤️. 

It's a cold heart that doesn't get joy from a dog, and sometimes a little bit of sunshine is what we need to get up and put one foot in front of the other each day.

Dogs (and pets in general) have become a life stage unto themselves.
